Unlike in the west of Bhutan where the towns are in valleys, in the east they are on the tops of hills or ridges.
Mongar town is the district headquarters of the Mongar district but the Dzong here only dates from 1953 - built on the orders of the 3rd King.
The Mongar Tsechu (or festival) in held in November. It is famed for its numerous mask dances and is one of the most important events the area has to offer. Villages from miles around come to view the celebrations on the terraces overlooking the festival ground and the valley below.
