Sacred Migration

Black Necked Cranes

From the end of October to March rare black necked cranes migrate to Phobjikha valley from the Tibetan plateau.

It is said that when the birds arrive from their long flight, they circle the monastery 3 times before landing. These elegant and shy birds are considered sacred. By all accounts, killing one could be punishable with a death sentence. The crane information centre is a hub that has many books, photos and displays about the birds and telescopes to spot wildlife in the valley.

Karina and James were lucky enough to be at the inaugral Black Necked Crane Festival back in 2007. Now this festival pulls quite a crowd - so well worth letting us know with plenty of lead time if you would like to come and witness this spectacle.
