Top 5 must-do's when visiting Mongolia
With so many countries in the world now accessible for travelling, it can sometimes get a little overwhelming planning for holidays each year.
There are corners of the world waiting to be explored and 12 new months in which to do it. Of course, one of our favourite places is Mongolia, the ultimate ‘get-away-from-it-all’ destination. The extraordinary space and tranquility one finds there, makes it a perfect place for a technology detox! Turn off your phone, leave your laptop at home – here are our top 5 must-do's when visiting Mongolia for the best holiday experiences:
1. Star Gazing
Watch for shooting stars! This has to be the ultimate experience of peace. Enjoy time and space to think under a glittering canopy of endless stars…
2. Horse riding
Known as a land with no fences, Mongolia – with its vast wide open spaces – is the ideal place for a family riding holiday. Imagine being able to gallop for miles and miles across an uninterrupted landscape with the wind in your hair… and once you’ve tried riding on horseback together, why not give camels, yaks or reindeers a go?!
3. Khongoryn Els
Khongoryn Els (the Singing Sands) are some of the largest sand dunes in Mongolia, 180 kilometers long and up to 800 metres high. A climb to the top gives amazing views across the surrounding desert. Enjoy a hot chocolate at the top and watch the sunset! This area is inhabited by traditional camel herders and is a great place to learn about these fascinating animals and ride a ‘Ship of the Desert’ in their natural habitat.
Stay in a traditional Mongolian ger (‘home’) and immerse yourself in the peace and tranquility of the countryside. Enjoy your own private ger situated in an idyllic remote spot by a river or at the foot of the mountains.
5. Nomadic Homestay
Live alongside a nomadic family and learn about their culture first hand. Be a herder for a few days – learn some Mongolian, round up animals with the family, learn to make buuz, help milk the goats and try a different pace of life.
