Vanity Fair in Bhutan
We have been delighted to host Michelle Jana Chan, Travel Editor of Vanity Fair on her bespoke journey to the incredible Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. Her article, published in the 2019 Hollywood edition of the magazine, beautifully captures the magic of this country and its people.
When we first started discussing Michelle's journey with her it soon became clear that she wanted much more than a run-of-the-mill, sight-seeing experience; music to our ears as we strive to make our journeys that bit more immersive and connected to the people we meet along the way.
The timing couldn't have been better because our own Emily was in Bhutan at the time so she set about finding and meeting some of the extraordinary characters featured in Michelle's piece. Bhutan's first tattoo artist, a social media influencer, Buddhist nuns, yak herders, a supreme court judge and more made up the cast of her journey.
We love how she has captured the changing face of one of our favourite destinations and this extract sums up some of the wisdom imparted by a Anay, a Buddhist nun that Michelle ate lunch with
Anay awkwardly hugs me. “I had a really great time with you,” she says. “Remember: always travel like a pilgrim.” Her words are a jolt. “How do I do that?” She shrugs, but replies, “Kindness. Love. Empathy. Happiness. Humility.”
