On August 1st 2008, Western
Mongolia will provide the optimum locations to witness the next total eclipse
of the sun. The eclipse path crosses first through Bayan-Ulgii province and then
again through Hovd province in the South-western corner of the country. Both regions
are forecast to provide clear views of the eclipse, with the more remote southern
point providing the least projected cloud cover.

viewing and more
Why not take this opportunity to visit one
of the most remote, unspoilt, rugged and beautiful landscapes in the world, and
also gain an insight into the unique culture of this region? Panoramic Journeys
have designed special itineraries to incorporate not only the eclipse, but also
adventurous explorations through the wilds of the Altai mountains - driving, trekking
and horse-riding through craggy mountainous terrain, lush valleys, and along lakeshores.

A rare event
..
Total solar eclipses are very
rare events for any given place on Earth because totality is only seen where the
Moon's umbra touches the Earth's surface. A total solar eclipse is a spectacular
natural phenomenon and many people consider travel to remote locations in order
to observe one. The 1999 total eclipse in Europe, said by some to be the most-watched
eclipse in human history, helped to increase public awareness of the phenomenon.
This was illustrated by the number of people willing to make the trip to witness
the 2005 annular eclipse and the 2006 total eclipse.
